2ws Parts Removal

If you need pictures check the online shop manual found HERE

Get 4 (or more) jack stands and get the car completely in the air. Make sure you put them in good spots and test for stability before getting under the car, safety first.

Front rack

Remove the front wheels.

Disconnect the front tie rods from the knuckle. You can use a puller for this or follow my quick balljoint removal tutorial.

Remove the tie rod balljoints from the tie rods using 2 19mm wrenches. Spin the nuts off of the tie rods as well.

Remove the metal shield covering where the P/S lines screw into the rack. Once it is off you need to get something to drain P/S fluid into. Set it under where the metal lines screw in and then unscrew the lines.

The P/S lines may be stuck from being on there for years and a standard wrench might start to round them off. If they do start to round STOP. You will need to pick up some wrenches that are called "Flare nut wrenches". They are designed to slip over the metal line and then onto the nut. This is what they look like:

While the P/S line are off and draining remove the cross member that runs from the front subframe to the rear subframe.

Remove the downpipe and the front swaybar.

Remove the 4 bolts holding on the C brackets for the rack. Once they are off pull the bushings off too, the rack comes out easier if they are off.

Turn the key to the first position to unlock the steering and then turn the wheel all the way to the right.

Remove the 2 10mm bolts from the joint between the column and steering rack. It's located in the engine bay below the brake booster. Slide the joint up off the pinion coming from the rack, just leave it on the splines from the column.

To remove the rack first make sure it is still turned all the way to the right. It won't come out otherwise.

Pull the drivers side down a little until the steering pinion clears the hole in the subframe. Now pull the whole rack towards the passenger side as far as you can. Next pull the drivers side of the rack down and the tie rod should just barely clear the subframe.
Once the drivers side is out all you need to do is pull the whole thing toward the drivers side to get the passenger tie rod out.

Rear

Take off the rear wheels.

Unbolt the rear lower arms from the 2WS subframe and shocks but leave them attached to the knuckles.

Detach the toe arms from the the knuckles. Here is a picture showing the toe arms:

If your car has A.L.B. there will be 2 wiring brackets you need to remove from the 2WS subframe now.

Once the lower arm is detached from the 2WS subframe and the toe arms are detached from the knuckles remove the 4 large (17mm) bolts holding the 2WS subframe onto the chassis. It should drop down and off taking the toe arms with it.
