Teamnebio PMed me saying that he doesnt have this problem and
his is a 90-91. So Im thinking this might only apply to 88-89 ludes. If someone
with a Helms manual for 90-91 ludes could look at the ignition system diagram
and see if it shows a resistor in the ignition coil that would be great. The
symbol would look like:
UPDATE: Well I had a pp.com memebr with a 90-91 tell me they do have a resistor in their coil. So I have no clue, I guess don't bother with this unless your AFC is reading wrong?
If you have a S-AFC and then install a MSD Blaster-2 coil you may notice that the RPM the S-AFC thinks your at is WAY off. It gets worse as the RPM climb I would rev to 3000 and it would think I was around 2100, no good.
It turns out our stock coil has a resistor in it which the Blaster 2 coil lacks, well I needed to get that resistor because the Helms manual didnt look to have any usefull info about it so....
Thaar she blows! This is after being melted with a torch, hit with a hammer, and then we finally managed to break it open with a sledge hammer! Im willing to bet this is one of the toughest components in the entire car! :-)
Now I was able to get the colour code off it, 1 gold band and 3 red bands. Just go to radio shack and buy one of those 5 packs of 'em it came to $1.07 after tax.
Now just install it on the correct wire coming off the negative terminal, how do you know which is correct? Heh well you dont, both the wires are blue with no stripe. Theres a 50-50 chance you will get it right the first time, you will know if its the wrong wire because the car wont start.
Once you confirm the correct wire I would suggest using some solder to secure it good then wrap a whole bunch of electrical tape around it and ou should be good to go! Now you can actually use the S-AFC again. :-)
